The mobile scene is becoming more and more exciting lately. More applications are being launched each day and bandwidth is growing. New mobile hand phone models are being released every quarter and more and more people are proud owners of broadband mobile devices such as tablets, netbooks, and laptops.

What does such trends mean for the Internet business owner? Can you see a way to take advantage of the opportunities in the current state of affairs? One way to do so, is to convert your website to a mobile-friendly website. Here are some tips on how to design and build a mobile version of your site.

Tip 1: Screen size matters. This consideration is the most important of all. Never assume that all mobile devices can view your mobile site. Mobile devices come in different sizes and screen resolutions. So it’s difficult to have a site that fits all the different sizes. The best approach, therefore, is to keep the size of your website relative. In other words, use percentage to state the height and width of your website instead of an absolute number. That way, both small and large monitors can view your site in well presented tables.

Tip 2: Use graphics sparingly. Some mobile devices have very small screens. For this reason, displaying unnecessary graphics may cause you to lose a percentage of mobile visitors. If possible, use icon sized GIF or JPEG files that are fast loading and small in size. Avoid using animated graphics as they can be rather distracting.

Tip 3: Use easy to read fonts and a sensible font size. Do not try fancy fonts for mobile sites. They may be displayed differently on different devices due to different Operating Systems. Popular fonts include Arial, Times New Roman and Helvetica. If you use fonts that are not installed on the default OS, your texts may not be displayed correctly.

Tip 4: Use a white background. You should use a white background or a relatively light background for two reasons. Firstly, your texts are easier to read when you use a white background. Texts that are painful to read will cause readers to leave the site quickly. Secondly, your links will become more visible. As web visitors navigate through your site, they want to be able to find what they are looking for quickly. Having links that stand out will make it easier for visitors to identify the content that they are looking for.

Tip 5: Have a clear navigational structure. This means three things. First, your main navigation menu should be clearly visible. Second, use a sitemap to help visitors get around just in case they need to look for something quickly. Third, link to your internal pages within your content. That way, web visitors don’t have to refer to the navigation menu all the time.
